About Us – the History of Air California Adventure
The Early Years
Air California Adventure (AirCal) started as an outdoor adventure business in 1993. At that time, AirCal offered hang gliding and paragliding instruction throughout Southern California. Then in 1996, AirCal took over the concession and operations of the Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla, California. The Gliderport has over 85 years of history and is a National Historical Monument to Aviation. As a result, AirCal offers instructional tandem flights, an esteemed flight school, and the award-winning Cliffhanger Café.
Horsepower and Thrust
AirCal began powered paragliding instruction in 1997. This required more space and as such, pilots preferred flying sites further inland. So AirCal began searching for the perfect location and finally found the Terra Lago Golf Resort. The Terra Lago is located in the Coachella Valley, East of Los Angeles and Riverside. The Valley is part of one of the most beautiful deserts in California. The region contains nearly 150 golf resorts, numerous spas, tons of outdoor activities, and great restaurants. Furthermore, it’s surrounded by breathtaking views of Joshua Tree National Park, San Bernardino Mountains, Salton Sea, Mt. San Jacinto and the high desert. The region’s weather combines with topographical features that provide an ideal training environment and a stunning backdrop in flight.
